Language requirements

You can find below the language requirements at each GEMMA partner. We strongly encourage you to also check the language requirements on each partners' website in case there are last minute changes.

  • Bologna
    • English: Level required: B2
    • Certificates accepted: Any official English certificate will be accepted.
    • Italian: Level required: A2
    • Certificates accepted: Dante Institute standard test or equivalent.
  • York
    • English: Following the recommendations of the UK Home Office, the University of York has specific language requirements. You can find further information
    • Certificates accepted:
      • IELTS: 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component
      • PTE: 61, with no less than 55 in each component
      • CAE and CPE (from January 2015): 176 with no less than 169 in each component
      • TOEFL: 87, with a minimum of 21 in each component
      • Trinity ISE: Level 3 with Merit in all requirement
  • Oviedo
    • Spanish: Level required: B2
    • Certificates accepted: Any official Spanish Certificate; i.e. DELE.
    • English: Minimum level required: B2

  • Lodz
    • English: Minimum level required: C1.

      • a certificate confirming the knowledge of the English language issued by the National School of Public Administration as a result of a linguistic checking procedure

      • certificate of passed departmental exam in the field of English in:
        • the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
        • the office supporting the minister responsible for economy, the Ministry of Foreign Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Maritime Economy,
        • the Ministry of National Defense - level 3333, level 4444 according to STANAG 6001;
      • a document confirming entry on the list of sworn translators in the Republic of Poland or a document confirming the authorization of a sworn translator in another Member State of the European Union, a Member State of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) - parties to the agreement on the European Economic Area or in the Swiss Confederation in terms of language English;
      • a document issued abroad recognized as equivalent to a secondary school-leaving certificate, university graduation diploma or confirming obtaining a degree or an academic title, if English was the only language of instruction;
      • a document confirming completion of the English language course preparing for studies in Poland in the entity referred to in art. 13 sec. 1 of the Law on Higher Education and Science;
      • in the event of a justified inability to obtain one of the documents listed in points 1-18, the results of examinations carried out via means of distance communication, in particular Duolingo and IELTS Indicator at the level of at least B2, may be recognized.

  • Granada
    • Spanish: Level required: B2
    • Certificates accepted: Any official Spanish Certificate; i.e. DELE.
    • English: Minimum level required: B2

  • Utrecht

For GEMMA the RMA Gender Studies rule apply and the required English level for admission there is EMI-advanced.

  • English: Minimum level required: C1 (Grade B)
  • Certificates accepted:
    • IELTS, Academic Mod (Please note that IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted. Any English language test not mentioned in the overview is not accepted).
      • Min. score: 7.0 overall, at least 6.5 for writing
    • TOEFL (iBT including Home Edition)
      • Minimum score: 100, at least 24 reading, 22 listening, 25 speaking, 24 writing
    • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (CAE).
